Truly dedicated to the art of ceramics, Philippe Le Bouteiller opened his studio in 1996, right in the heart of volcano country in Auvergne, a magnificent region of central France. He lives in a protected natural environment where he draws his inspiration from the now sleepy mountains which, some 6000 years ago were actively spiting boiling lava onto the surrounding plains. |

Philippe’s keen interest in geology and chemistry lead him to learn more about the mineral resources all around, opening for him the fabulous field of lava glazes. He found that the rather austere black or grey lava rocks all contain the essential chemical elements necessary to become subtle glazes with delicate colors once brought back to a melted state through high firing.
